Continuing my series of topsy-turvy random travelogues on the subcontinent, today we arrive in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. This is a B-list kind of destination in India, crowded out by all the star attractions in the region (Agra, Khajuraho, Varanasi, Delhi etc). Nevertheless it is a serious little city with cultural/historical heritage aplenty.
The city has an aura of comfortably resting on its laurels, its glory days long behind but not in any hurry to modernise/get with the programme.
Fans of the imposing Mughal architectural style will adore Lucknow with its rich abundance of structures whch see far less of the crowds of Delhi, Agra etc.
The Indian obsession for cricket given an Islamic twist...the whites of the kurtas coincidentally echoing the old-school cricket uniforms of the Brits....
Decadent palaces, whimsical labyrinthes (damn scary to get lost in as dusk approaches - trust me!) and magnificent minarets scatter the skyline.
I love this man......beating the heat with chappals as pillow...no airs and graces here!!
A fairyland kind of clock tower and one day when I speak enough Hindi I shall discover more about this confection.......in the meantime......
ENTERTAINMENT SWEET HOUSE!!
a lifesaving restaurant by the railway station, serving yummy dals, thalis and sweets!
Goodbye Lucknow, your moody magnificence continues to serve you well!
